So the time has finally come, a virtual reality game that can be played without a PC or console. This game is called NextVR and was available on the Oculus Quest 2 for $4.99 which is pretty reasonable considering that some games on other VR platforms are over $60 plus hardware to play them. Unfortunately, though the company shut down on May 22nd, 2019. This definitely isn’t the first shutdown of a game company this generation nor will it be the last but at least there are plenty more games coming out so let’s get on with why you came here….
The gameplay is basically just darts except the oculus quest is your throwing arm and there are 2 targets that you throw darts at. You can also increase or decrease the number of targets which is a pretty nice feature. In between rounds, there’s basically just a scoreboard and sun, no actual menus so this was definitely an arcade experience. There are only 2 options for your character so you’ll have to pick one when you first start playing, male or female? There are no other customization options. There are only 2 dart types which is an eagle-eyed or normal dart, but you can choose if it’s fast or slow. There is also the option to play with either 10 or 20 darts each game and there is no set amount of rounds so it kind of depends on how long you want to play for.
There is only 1 arena and it’s not very fancy, I wish there were more options for customization here. The sound effects are okay but the throwing arm isn’t exactly accurate so you’ll find yourself throwing slightly too far away from the target sometimes. Overall for $4.99, this game was definitely worth buying and if you got it before they shut down then lucky you! If you didn’t get a chance to buy this game then I’m sorry but at least NextVR showed us that a VR-exclusive sports game can exist which might motivate other developers to follow suit…maybe…
I give this 3 out of 5 stars because it was great while it lasted but now we have no choice but to wait until someone else makes aVR exclusive sports game.
