Acron: Attack of the Squirrels! Review

Help the squirrel save his acorns in this “Monkey Ball” type game. You control multiple squirrels at one time, you can switch between them by tapping on their icons with each acorn color represented by a different icon.

The goal is to protect your acorns from being gobbled up by anything that moves, be it snakes, birds, dogs, cats, etc. The squirrels are able to jump, roll into a ball which you can use to ricochet yourself off objects or prey on your enemies.

You start off with easy mode mostly made up of snakes that give you “easy” points until the first level boss appears – an angry ferret who thinks he’s a dragon. After you defeat him you advance to progressively more difficult stages until the final level – a cursed forest filled with even more ferrets and other unsavory creatures.

The graphics were very simple, almost looking like an old arcade game from the 80s/early 90s, but was fun to play nonetheless! New elements are added as you progress through the game such as water features, “track” type slopes and other obstacles. The controls took a little bit of getting used to as I’m not used to playing games that require me to use both hands at once on my phone but it got easier after a few tries. There are no advertisements or in-app purchases, which is nice if you don’t want to be bothered with that kind of stuff while playing.

The game is compatible with multiple VR headsets, I use Daydream and it works just fine. The controls are intuitive and the pacing is just right – not too difficult or frustrating but enough so that you have to think a little bit. It also doesn’t take too long to finish the game, I was able to defeat it in one sitting.

Overall I greatly enjoyed this game, even if it is very simple and similar to other VR games that I’ve played before. It’s good for anyone who just wants to kill 10-15 minutes playing a game or if you want something easy and fun for your kidsto play. I give it 4 out of 5 stars!
